ASBESTOSIS COMPENSATION CLAIM SOLICITORS UK
Asbestosis is a medical condition, caused by scarring of the lungs due to contamination with asbestos fibres. Asbestosis can lead to breathing problems, respiratory difficulties and heart failure which can contribute to death from other causes. Most victims came into contact with asbestos decades earlier whilst in employment, due to an employer's negligence in failing to adequately take care of health and safety in the workplace. Anyone who is diagnosed with this condition can make an asbestosis compensation claim and should contact a specialist solicitor, experienced in dealing with asbestos related disease cases, to find out if they are eligible to receive damages.

Time Limits
This illness is a serious, long-term disease of the lungs where normal tissue is replaced by scar tissue but it is not a cancer and it is not usually fatal. The scarring of the lungs caused by asbestos fibres makes breathing difficult due to restriction of the rate at which oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse through the lungs. The disease usually progresses slowly and the latency period for the onset of a confirmed diagnosis is generally between ten and twenty years after the initial exposure but may be considerably longer. The time limit (limitation) for starting an asbestosis compensation claim in a court of law is generally three years from a confirmed diagnosis of asbestosis by a qualified medical practitioner.

Irritant Fibres
The mechanism of damage starts when a microscopically small asbestos fibre is inhaled deep into the lungs and meets a biological gas exchanging structure called alveoli which contain macrophage cells that protect the lungs by destroying invading particles. In attempting to deal with asbestos fibres the macrophage are lacerated causing their internal digestive enzymes to spill into the alveolus thereby causing extensive damage.

Lung Cancer
Those who suffer from asbestosis are at greater risk of developing lung cancer. A smoker who has been exposed to asbestos fibres is 90 times more likely to develop lung cancer than a non-smoking person who has not been exposed. Smokers who have been exposed to asbestos at some point in their lives are at much greater risk of developing lung cancer than smokers who have never been exposed. An asbestosis compensation claim will also include an application for damages for any associated illness such as lung cancer.

Building Material
This product was used extensively as a building material for over 30 years starting in the 1950s however its use is now illegal in the construction or refurbishment of any premises. Some of this material has been removed however it is estimated that it is present in over half a million non-domestic premises amounting in total to many thousands of tons. Removal work will continue for the foreseeable future and those involved are now potentially at the highest risk, as are workers involved in the refurbishment, repair or maintenance of these buildings including plumbers, joiners and electricians.
