ACCIDENT SAFETY TESTS

Euro NCAP was established in 1997 and provides independent and accurate information about the safety performance of models of cars through rigorous testing procedures. All new car models must pass safety tests established on a national legal basis before they are sold however many manufacturers also carry out additional testing which is not required by law. Euro NCAP uses test procedures based on European Union safety standards for front and side impact and tests are also undertaken to assess the risk to pedestrians if struck by the front of the car. It is believed that the public will show sufficient interest in the extra safety features offered on certain models as a result of these tests that they will influence buying trends and therefore ensure that more manufacturers include additional safety features in their volume produced cars over and above the safety measures strictly required by law thereby enhancing overall safety for both drivers and pedestrians. It is hoped that greater public awareness of the dangers of road accidents, together with the design and engineering skills of the car industry, will significantly reduce the number of car crash compensation claims.

    What are the Euro-NCAP tests?

    • The NCAP tests provide an independent source of information on the crash safety of new cars.
    • Included are front-impact, side-impact and head-protection tests, as well as a pedestrian test which determines the level of injury to a pedestrian hit by the vehicle.

    What do they involve?

    • In the front-impact test, the car is driven head-on into a deformable barrier at 40 mph.
    • In the side-impact test, a trolley with a deformable front is crashed into the driver's side of the car at 30 mph.
    • In the head-protection test, a pole is accelerated sideways through the driver's side of the car at head level, at 18 mph.
    • In the pedestrian tests, wired-up dummies provide information about the levels of force that hit them and the areas of 'injury', enabling researchers to predict the outcome of the accident had real people been involved.

    How safe are older models?

    • The newer the car, the safer it is. The risk of serious injury or death has declined by more than 20 per cent in the past 10 years, thanks to airbags, stronger "safety cages", seatbelt pre-tensioners etc.
    • Larger, heavier vehicles are safer than smaller, lighter ones.
    • Tall vehicles with a high centre of gravity, such as 4x4s and pick-ups, are more likely to roll over in the event of an impact.
