CYCLE ACCIDENTS
Some of the most common types of cycle accidents include:
- Collisions with other vehicles;
- Falls when trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle;
- Falls as a result of defective road surfaces;
- Potholes in the road surface.
- Protrusions from the road surface.
- Badly carried out road repairs.
- Spills and debris on the road.
On average there are three cyclists killed in road traffic accidents every week and more than 20,000 cyclists are injured every year in reported road accidents including more than 3,000 who suffer serious injury.
It is estimated that more than two thirds of casualties are not reported, especially if the victim is a child.
Approximately a quarter of fatalities, and a third of those injured, are children and injuries peak at 16 years old.
Most accidents occur in urban areas and the majority happen at a road junction, with T junctions and roundabouts being the most dangerous. Four out of five casualties are male. The most dangerous hours are 3.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. on weekdays with most casualties occurring in the Spring and Summer months and the least occurring in the Autumn and Winter months. The most common situations that result in injuries are as follows:
- rider and motorist going straight ahead at a junction
- rider turning right across a road
- motorist turning or emerging into path of the rider
- riding into the path of a motor vehicle particularly when riding off a pavement
- rider overtaking and being hit from behind
