Although most cases of head injury are mild, there are many people who suffer serious difficulties and have permanent residual symptoms. Two common problems that are often permanent are:
- Post traumatic epilepsy - It has been estimated that 1 in 20 people who suffer brain damage start to have epileptic fits
- Hydrocephalus - Is a build up of fluid causing pressure on the brain often resulting in physical and psychological problems and affects less than 1 in a 100 people
Brain damage is most often caused as a result of:
- Closed head injury which occurs when the head stops suddenly while in motion and the brain hits the inside of the skull causing damage. This can also occur without external damage to the head and outward appearances can be deceptive as there may be severe damage to the brain. This often results from the brain swelling resulting in an increase in intracranial pressure which causes further compression injury.
- Open head injury which occurs when an object penetrates the skull. If the force is great enough, the skull can fracture however this terminology refers to the condition of the skull and not the brain. A person may be described as having an open injury with or without severe traumatic damage.
Diagnosis of brain damage is usually carried out by a combination of methods including scans and by the use of psychometric testing which can examine many different aspects of the brains' performance. The main categories include:
- Minor head injury which rarely results in permanent problems however symptoms may include headache, dizziness, sensitivity to noise or light, ringing in the ears, blurred or double vision, restlessness, insomnia, reduced concentration, poor memory, tiredness, irritability, anxiety and depression. A head injury may also cause temporary emotional difficulties.
- Moderate head injury or severe head injury which may result in permanent problems including difficulty with attention, tiredness, learning, memory, solving problems and planning. Emotions may also be affected leading to a deterioration in ability to hold down a job and maintain close relationships.
