LONDON UNDERGROUND ACCIDENT CLAIMS

The last serious London Underground accident occurred when a tube train failed to stop at Moorgate station and hit the buffers at high speed killing 29 passengers, however since then there have been a number of less serious accidents involving fatalities and injury. The worst disaster in recent years was the Kings Cross fire in 1988, when 27 people died in an inferno which swept up the station's escalators and through its ticket hall.

Whilst the biggest cause of death on the tube is suicide, and passengers not taking sufficient care on the platform, there was a recent conviction for serious offences following a London Underground accident relating to a breach of the Health & Safety legislation which related to a fatal accident. A fine of £250,000 was imposed for an offence under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act and a further fine of £50,000 was imposed for a breach of the Regulation of Railways Act. Legal costs were also ordered to be paid in the sum of £14,0000. The company had admitted full responsibility for the incident which was caused through a blind spot in cameras at Eastcote station on the Piccadilly Line. The problem with the cameras had already been identified on two separate occasions. Judge Crocker, sitting at Isleworth Crown Court said "The fact of the matter is that no effective system for checking for blind-spots was in place and had not been for many months. This was an accident waiting to happen and, regretfully, a tragic and fatal one."

It's the oldest in the world and the second biggest with over three million passengers every weekday but it's financially stretched and lack of money and safety rarely go together. The Lord Mayor of London Mr. Ken Livingstone recently said passengers "take a risk every time they get on" the tube, adding; "Every day there isn't a fatal accident is another day when we're lucky." He went on to say "We are in a potentially lethal situation because of the calibre of the management and a lack of investment."
