MESOTHELIOMA TREATMENT
Asbestos fibres entering the lining of the lungs, or the lining of the abdomen most
often cause this form of malignant cancer and victims can claim
compensation. Recovering money can in no way compensate for the terrible suffering that
victims of this disease endure. Yet it can end the practical worries caused by financial
losses such as loss of earnings. This money can also fund private mesothelioma treatment.
Our specialist solicitors can provide legal advice for
anyone that thinks they may have a case for compensation.
Mesothelioma can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or a
combination of these. The treatment plan depends on the type and severity of Mesothelioma
and the individual patient’s general health.
The patient’s overall health is carefully assessed before any sort of surgery is
considered.
Surgery can be used to control the disease and improve the patient’s health in the
long–term. This type of surgery is called aggressive surgery.
There are also types of surgery that help relieve the symptoms of the disease. These
types of surgery are called palliative procedures.
There are different surgical procedures available to help treat both the pleural and
the peritoneal form of this cancer.
Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a form of aggressive surgery which removes as much of the
pleural mesothelioma tumour as possible. This complicated procedure involves removal of
the pleura, the lung, the diaphragm and the pericardium.
Because of the high risk of this surgery it is not a suitable treatment for all
patients of pleural mesothelioma. Doctors assess a patient’s ability to tolerate the
procedure. Usually only younger patients with good general health and with Stage I disease
are treated this way.
Extrapleural pneumonectomy is not performed at all hospitals. It is very important for
patients who want the option of this surgery to check with different hospitals. Different
surgeons also assess a patient’s eligibility for this procedure in different ways so it is
also vital for every patient to check whether they fulfil the particular surgeon’s
criteria for this surgery as they may be able to have the treatment in one hospital but
not another.
Chemotherapy is a way of treating cancer with medication. It is sometimes used as a mesothelioma treatment, especially after surgery, to kill cancer cells that are still in
the body. These drugs have had mixed results. Combination chemotherapy has sometimes been
effective and new mesothelioma drugs are being developed and tested.
Palliative procedures are surgical procedures carried out on patients with advanced
mesothelioma to help relieve the symptoms. These procedures cannot cure the disease but
can reduce or control symptoms such as breathlessness and pain.
Surgery for patients of peritoneal mesothelioma is mostly intended to relieve the
symptoms of the cancer rather than completely remove the tumour.
Radiation therapy is also used in an attempt to kill remaining tumour cells after
surgery. It can cause some reduction of the disease but has not been proven to
significantly improve chances of survival. Yet it can relieve mesothelioma symptoms.
