Mesothelioma is an asbestos related cancer. Victims of this condition have a legal right to claim compensation against former employers and dependants of victims who have died from asbestos related cancer may also be entitled to financial compensation. In addition to mesothelioma those exposed to asbestos fibres have a much higher risk of developing asbestos related lung cancer. Our specialist personal injury compensation claim solicitors have extensive experience of dealing with asbestos cancer in all its forms. Our asbestos lung cancer solicitors use the no win no fee scheme and offer advice at no cost and with no obligation.
Almost all victims of asbestos related cancers can trace a time when they were exposed to asbestos even though there may be decades between the initial exposure and the diagnosis. Due to the lapse of time compensation claims for asbestos lung cancer can be difficult to prove. It is also possible to contract this industrial disease through secondary contact with asbestos fibres and it is not necessary to be directly employed in an "at risk" occupation. There are many victims who lived in the vicinity of an asbestos factory or who handled contaminated overalls and clothing.
1999 Asbestos Ban
This mineral was used to manufacture heat and fire-resistant insulating material for use in building, ship-building, household appliances and the motor industry. There are three types of asbestos named by their colour. Blue and brown are known to cause lung cancer and their use or importation was banned over 20 years ago. Experts now believe the white variety may also be harmful. The use of all asbestos was made illegal in 1999.
Pleural & Peritoneal
There are three main types of this asbestos cancer known as asbestos related lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma affecting the lining of the lungs and the lining of the abdomen respectively. Pleural mesothelioma is the more common form of asbestos cancer representing over three quarters of all diagnoses. The pleural form is caused by breathing the fibres into the lungs and the peritoneal form is caused when, after breathing in fibres, they are coughed up and swallowed.
Mesothelioma is an extremely difficult form of asbestos cancer to treat because of the location of the tumour. Its closeness to surrounding organs makes it impossible to treat the tumour with strong radiation without damaging vital organs. Some reduction in the disease can be achieved with lower doses of radiation but it has not been proved that this reduction actually increases the patient's chances of survival.
